Neo Financial

The SkipTheDishes founders taking on the big banks from the Prairies

Neo Financial was founded in 2019 by four former SkipTheDishes executives. It has become Canada's fastest-growing fintech, selling credit cards, savings, investing and mortgages without a single branch. Its people hold equity and are expected to think like owners, and its funding runs from Valar Ventures to Tobi Lütke and AIMCo.

01 · Culture

How they work

Our viewNeo's culture rests on ownership. Every full-time employee joins its equity incentive program, and its careers page calls ownership a mindset rather than a perk. It is openly in-office-first, with a work-from-anywhere option for eligible roles, and it builds community through quarterly celebrations that include families. So far its recognition has come for growth rather than from workplace-culture lists.

02 · Capabilities

What they do best

Our viewNeo takes the playbook that built SkipTheDishes, with fast product cycles, partner distribution and strong consumer brands, and applies it to banking. Its co-branded cards with Tim Hortons and Cathay Pacific, along with more than 10,000 merchant partners, give it reach without branches. Securitizing its own loans is the next step toward funding growth on its own balance sheet.

03 · Capital

Who backs them, and what they back

Venture-backedRaised C$650M+ (equity and debt) · 2024-11 source ↗

Our viewNeo is venture-backed, with Valar Ventures as an anchor. It became a unicorn in 2022 and later added well-known founder-angels, including Tobi Lütke and Stewart Butterfield. Its 2024 Series D combined equity with a large debt facility, and a 2026 round brought in AIMCo and Northleaf as Neo moved to sell bundled loans to institutional investors.
