Cohere

Canada's own frontier AI lab, built for enterprises that keep their data close

Cohere was founded in Toronto in 2019 and now builds foundation models and the North agent platform for banks, telcos and governments. It runs as a remote-first company where everyone holds equity. Its backers include Canadian pension funds, BDC and Ottawa itself, and its leaders say any exit that takes it out of Canada would only happen "if we fail."

01 · Culture

How they work

Our viewCohere backs its culture with concrete terms: six months of fully paid parental leave for either parent, six weeks of vacation and equity for every employee. It describes itself as a remote-friendly, globally spread team guided by three values: momentum, openness and autonomy. Through Cohere Labs, its open research community, it extends that openness well beyond its own payroll. We could not find third-party workplace awards for it.

In their words

02 · Capabilities

What they do best

Our viewCohere builds large language models and North, its platform for building AI agents, for organizations that need private, secure deployments. RBC, Bell, Dell and LG CNS are among its customers. Its annual recurring revenue reached roughly US$240 million in 2025, and it is expanding into Europe through its planned combination with Germany's Aleph Alpha.

Who backs them, and what they back

Venture-backedRaised About US$1.5B (before the 2026 Series E) · 2025-08 source ↗

Our viewCohere is venture-backed, and much of its funding is Canadian: Radical Ventures, Inovia, PSP Investments, HOOPP, BDC and EDC, alongside Nvidia, AMD and Salesforce. Ottawa has committed up to $240 million toward its Canadian compute build-out. In 2026 Cohere began deploying capital of its own, agreeing to acquire Aleph Alpha in a deal anchored by a €500-million Series E led by Germany's Schwarz Group.
