Geotab

A basement startup that became the world's telematics leader without outside investors

Neil Cawse and his siblings started Geotab in Oakville in 2000. It now connects about six million vehicles for more than 100,000 customers in 160 countries. It has grown without outside capital, puts about $200 million a year into R&D, and has been a Platinum Club member of Canada's Best Managed Companies for nine straight years.

01 · Culture

How they work

Our viewGeotab keeps a builder's culture at scale: a flat structure, open doors, hackathons and AI tools for every employee. Deloitte has named it one of Canada's Best Managed Companies nine years in a row, and Fast Company has ranked it among the best workplaces for innovators twice. It also invests heavily in young talent, hiring more than 200 interns a year.

03 · Capital

Who backs them, and what they back

Bootstrapped

Our viewGeotab is a rare Canadian unicorn that grew without outside investors: privately held, bootstrapped from a basement and funded by its own revenue. It deploys capital through steady acquisitions, most recently Verizon Connect's commercial operations in Europe and Australia, and through about $200 million a year in R&D.
