Shopify

Ottawa-born commerce platform that treats its own operating model as a product

Founded in Ottawa in 2006, Shopify now powers more than 14% of US e-commerce and processed US$378B in merchandise volume in 2025. It runs as a remote-first company that lets every employee set their own cash-to-equity mix, and it has made AI fluency a baseline expectation for everyone who works there.

01 · Culture

How they work

Our viewShopify treats how it works as something to design and redesign: it went 'digital by design' in 2020, deleted 322,000 hours of recurring meetings in 2023, and in 2025 made reflexive AI use a baseline expectation. Employees choose their own blend of cash, RSUs and options through Flex Comp, can work from almost anywhere for 90 days a year, and are promoted on mastery rather than headcount. The pace is demanding and the company has pulled back some programs, including its Build Native Indigenous entrepreneurship initiative in 2025.

PublicTSX: SHOP · since 2015 source ↗

Our viewShopify raised about US$122M in venture funding led by Bessemer, FirstMark and Felicis before its 2015 IPO, and has been self-funding ever since. It moved its US listing from the NYSE to Nasdaq in 2025 and joined the Nasdaq-100, while remaining on the TSX. It has used its balance sheet for bold bets, including the US$2.1B Deliverr acquisition, later sold to Flexport for an equity stake.
